When Vegans Eat Out: Am Nordpol
Vegan food pops up at the strangest places sometimes. When a couple of people mentioned that Am Nordpol, a Gasthaus (inn) that serves Bohemian and Austrian home cooking, was offering a vegan fixed menu, we knew we had to head over to Leopoldstadt, the 2nd district of Vienna, and see for ourselves! The three-course fixed menu runs at 10,50€ for a small and 14,50€ for the large version; I had the...

Vegan Chai Muffins in August/September Issue of...
Look, what we came across in the current issue (# 12) of our favourite guilty pleasure, Jamie (as in Oliver) Magazine: a recipe for Chai Muffins! It’s always fun and strange to come across veganism in mainstream media. Since not all of us can or want to spend a lot of money for a pretty food magazine, I will hook you up with the recipe. Go metric!

Japanese Soy Ice Cream by Kracie.
None other than my vegetarian mother found Japanese vegan ice cream at the Korean supermarket, Nakwon, the other day. We sampled chocolate and vanilla and really enjoyed all the creamy goodness. I’ll have to get back to you about how much one small tub is, but whatever the price, it’ll be worth it.
Thanks, mom!

for the vegan on the go!
this broccoli roll filled with margarine, shredded carrots, leeks, zucchini and soy sprouts makes a mighty fine snack when you are on the go and your stomach is growling. it’s available at the bakery chain Bäckerei Ströck for around 2, 50 € and quite filling.
Ströck can be found here and even has a handy pdf list of all their vegan products online. Enjoy your carbs!

when vegans eat out: Makro1
(don’t call it a comeback!)
I have the tendency to stay away from overly hippie, macrobiotic, health food store-ish type restaurants and what a silly tendency that is. especially if it means that I am missing out on wonderful spots like Makro1.
Makro1 serves an all vegan lunch plate with or without a bowl of soup (choose between small or large portion) from 11:30 am to 14:30 pm....

green smoothies at Naschmarkt
it was a little hard to believe our eyes when we stumbled upon a green smoothie stand on Naschmarkt. Vienna is always a little behind, but it seems “raw” is coming to town.
€ 3 for a delicious medium Green Gorilla smoothie. I am not making that name up!

manner reacts to the numerous complaint emails
the Manner company finally reacts to the numerous complaints from the vegan community after the ingredient “milk sugar” started showing up in their ingredient lists. the form letter states that the recipe has NOT changed, that the wafers in the cute pink wrappers do NOT contain any animal products. since their production process changed they legally have to list milk sugar to warn...

this and that returns!
we are shocked and in disbelief that the Austrian company Manner changed their 110 year old recipe for their famous wafers to include milk sugar. contact them and express your sadness, why don’t you? you can even join this new facebook group and commiserate. & make sure to stock up on the still vegan-friendly wafers.

new product: vantastic foods' fruit grizzlies
I love gummies! I used to eat them by the sackfuls as a little one and was sad (and disgusted) when I found out what gelatin is and where it comes from. yuck! fortunately there are many vegan gummies available and a lot of them even taste great. and then along come fruit grizzlies and make me regret I only bought the small bag. fruity, with a great bite and cute, to boot. just look at the cute...

we all scream for new york city ice cream!
I have been trying to figure out how and what to write about our stay in NYC in mid December of 2009/ early January 2010; there was just too much good stuff going on in the week we stayed there. so over the coming weeks I will try and pick a few of the highlights of the trip. I will try and keep the superlatives in check.
so, ice cream. mmmmmm, ice cream!

Mastering the Omelet!
sometimes it takes a sick (read quiet) day to muster up the courage to try a new recipe that slightly intimidates you. I have been looking at the Tofu Omelets from Vegan Brunch for months now but never really dared to stand up to the challenge. The other day I took my stuffed nose to the kitchen, though and was more than happy with the results! & the black salt cleared my nose out for a bit....

vegan travels: Grassroots Restaurant in Tampa,...
Team Vegan is currently touring NYC, rural North Carolina and Florida. While the City That Never Sleeps has vegan options, savory and/or sweet, on every corner and it would take many many weeks and many many vegan teams to sample them all, the situation is a little different in Florida’s Tampa area. So, you can imagine how eager I was to check out Grassroots Restaurant, one of the few...

vegan coming of age: tartex
what speculoos is to vegans these days, Tartex was to the (European) vegans back in the 90ies: everybody loved it, traveling punk bands lived off of it, cans of Tartex were exported to the US by traveling vegans in vast quantities.
I am always amused by the slight smell of dog food or liverwurst even (gasp!) upon first opening a can of the spread, but the pleasant texture and yummy taste has me...
