again: say cheese! soy cheese!
when it comes to new vegan products i DO want to believe the hype! there was a lot of buzz around this new vegan cheese alternative all the way from Greece called Santeciano by a company called Viotros, so when Formosa finally stocked it i simply had to get my greedy hands on a block of cheese. it didn’t hurt that my mother kindly paid for it because 400g go for € 7,90. i decided to...

The Soy Latte Chronicles pt. 4
what could possibly feel nicer than a perfectly steamed Cafe Latte after extensive shopping at the outdoor market. not much! Cafe Drechsler is conveniently located across the street from Naschmarkt and has great opening hours*; and previously unbeknownst to me, they serve a mean Cafe Latte. fabulous foaminess! price: can be yours for an ok € 3,10 with no extra charge for soy milk. note!...

Weekend at the Farmers Market
organic fruit and vegetables, bread and this and that simply taste better when picked up from a small stand from a kind stranger at the local farmers market. i finally made it down to the local market this weekend and picked up some nice goodies. cherries from Niederoesterreich, this year’s potatoes, saturn/donut/galaxy peaches and glutenloaf & pastries from the Kornblumenhof, a...

vegan on a budget pt. 2
the DM chain doesn’t need my free promotion but i have a lot of love for that place because their vegan/vegan-friendly store brands, alnatura and alverde, have been making my life a little cheaper and therefore easier.  one of my favourite products is their soy-mayonnaise, creamy and delicious and can be had for € 2, 27. and you all know alsan margarine and where to get it but know...

Austrian home-cooking: Linsengulasch mit...
i grew up watching my grandmother cook, she is an efficient and good cook and a wonderful gardener, too. last night i channeled her chef-spirit and re-created my favourite meal of hers: Linsengulasch mit Wasserspatzen!  Linsengulasch: heat vegetable oil and fry one chopped up onion until translucent, stir in a tablespoon of mild paprika and add the lentils (i used a big can of pre-cooked lentils...

DIY or die!
i do not print out recipes i find on the internets, i scribble them on scraps of paper or post-its and then lose them forever in hardly used cookbooks and behind shelves and the fridge.  it was time to get organised, so i made these out of index cards and a stamp kit: awesome, huh?

vegan icey cream!
seriously, what’s a summer without ice cream? up until recently us vegans had to depend on the watery fruity flavours that were supposedly maybe most likely probably vegan or we’d buy an overpriced carton of tofutti ice cream at the healthfood store. but now there is Eissalon “Am Schwedenplatz” They offer 6 flavours of home made soy ice cream. raspberry,...

Kiedis is vegan, so more power to him but Leona Lewis’ music is annoying and making annoying music isn’t sexy. but since when did we care what Peta had to say anyways? what are your personal picks.

no-egg salad sandwiches
you must have noticed by now that i like quick and easy meals, this no-fuss version of a no-egg salad is no exception. great on any sort of bread; i picked tramezzini bread and had the sandwiches with a side of chips. how:  mash a block of firm tofu, add circa 3 tablespoons of your favourite soyanaise, one tablespoon of mustard, 3 pickles, two pinches of tumeric, salt & pepper to taste,...

vegan on a budget pt. 1
in an ideal world we would grow and make all of our food ourselves, we would only shop at the farmer’s market or the family-owned store around the corner, but in the real world we grab our environmentally friendly cloth tote bags and walk to the nearest supermarket and if we are lucky they have their own organic, vegan-friendly line of products, like Zielpunkt/Plus does. i actually really...

Sunday Baking: Hazelnut Cake Experience
i found this recipe, searching for quick and easy cakes, via chefkoch.de. the recipe is originally for a blackberry cake but i sprinkled the batter with almonds instead of pressing blackberries into the top. i also added an additional cup (half soy milk, half water) of liquid because after following the instructions faithfully i ended up with a dough rather than a batter. so here goes: what: 2...

quick weekend cookery.
when you have a few items to use up (tomatoes, spring onions, tortilla wraps), this easy version of the tex-mex classic, fajitas, might just be the way to go. chicken fajitas w/ garlicy tomato-dip the fajitas simply consist of store bought tortillas, mock chicken fried in a ready made fajita mix wrapped up with some lettuce. for the dip i blended a handful of cherry tomatoes, a clove of...

vegan gossip.
a little birdy told us that Formosa will soon offer Tofutti ice cream & will add a new item to their menu in the coming week: a delicious chicken wrap (with some nice veggies, sauce and maybe even cheese in it) that i sampled today.  like the Ol’ Dirty Bastard said, I can’t wait!

The Soy Latte Chronicles pt. 3
you usually only really see cute little sandwich shops like Naked Lunch in cities like London, Berlin and New York. now Vienna has its very own tiny, stylish spot w/ brownies & cupcakes in the windows. don’t get your hopes up, though, they have no vegan sweet treats. their soy latte, well, actually i had a cappuccino, was good, smooth w/ a nice dome of froth. can be yours for € 3....

when vegans eat out pt. 3
there is a new kid on the block and i hope we’ll be friends soon.  a few days ago a place appropriately named Kaffee Vegan opened its doors in the 9th district, close to the university, ironically enough in the very same spot Samolis (RIP) used to make us drool over their delicious “cheese” burgers. so, we went today and were informed at the door that “there’s only...

when vegans eat out pt. 2
i have never been a big fan of curries but the all vegetarian, extremely vegan-friendly Dharamsala in the up-and-coming 16th district has shown me the light. now i am a believer! the chef is vegan, so you don’t have to worry about hidden ghee in any of the dishes, just mention that you are vegan and the friendly staff will hook you up. try their samosas, the seitan burger and the dhal, and...

we decided to do some cooking today and ended up with some tasty chicken quesadillas this is our really easy and filling version of the tex-mex classic. take a tortilla wrap, cover it in grated cheese (we used Red Cheddar Cheezly), add a layer of fried mock chicken, sprinkle with some chopped spring onions, add some more cheese, cover with a second wrap. now fry in a non-stick pan (no oil...

Quick home-made dinner: Udon Stir-Fry
this doesn’t really have a recipe.  i just threw all of the ingredients (tofu, oyster mushrooms, chinese cabbage, soy sprouts, zucchini, bok choy) into a pan, tofu first, soy sprouts last. added ginger oil and sesame oil and voila!

when vegans eat out pt. 1
one of my favourite restaurants in Vienna/Wien is definitely Formosa. i try to go there at least once a week for their amazing and affordable lunch specials. you can pick between circa 14 dishes, all mock meat heavy, chicken, shrimp, ham, duck, etc. i love their simple tofu & vegetable dish the most, actually. you get free soup or salad and on most days free dessert with your lunch. you must...
