vegan traveling: Amsterdam, the netherlands: Day II
I woke up quite refreshed on our second day, Saturday, in Amsterdam and was ready to get some breakfast. We picked Bagels & Beans, a franchise, for some coffee and, well, bagels and were greeted by a sign announcing they were now serving soy milk. alRIGHT!
We had cinnamon bagels with strawberry jam and cafe lattes (€ 3, 55) and fresh orange juice. Some of their bagels are organic and they have free WIFI.

We picked the bagel shop on Waterlooplein where you can watch the market wake up slowly on a Saturday morning.
Across the Plein ( square ) there’s a Natuurwinkel, a health food store, gosh i wish i could have bought all the Provamel tofu but we were traveling light, our bags were tiny! So here’s some pictures instead.

And then we walked and walked. And walked, until it was time for lunch. We decided to check out De Bolhoed, a family owned vegetarian restaurant with many vegan options that are clearly marked on the menu, located on scenic Prinsengracht near the trendy Jordaan quarter. Portions at the Bolhoed are big and affordable, we definitely ordered too much and ended up having no space for dessert. Scandalous, i know!!

the food:

tofu pate w/ a mixed salad and crispy bread

carrot, coconut and lime leaves soup

hummus with toasted pita chips

ragout croissant, a crispy dough pocket filled with seaweed, curried tofu & leek. very delicious, way too filling, though!

here’s the glorious inside shot.
and in case you are wondering what a Bolhoed is, here’s one peeking and waving bye bye.

With full bellies we walked to the Boerenmarkt, the organic farmers market, that takes place every Saturday on the square in front of the church between Noordermarkt and Noorderkerkstraat between 9 and 5 pm.

raw food stand!
After all this food we checked out some brain food at the American Book Center, an awesome huge book/magazine store at Spui 12.

There’s even a nice little vegan cook book section. What’s up, cupcakes?

check out this awesome yellow bike!
After a short rest in our hotel room, we decided to go back to The Golden Temple to check out their dinner menu (different from the lunch offers). get ready for all the nice food we enjoyed:

First of all, their menus are screen printed and state their vegan-friendliness. nice!
we started with fresh juice or sap to show off one of the ten dutch words i know.

rosemary focaccia

the Mezze platter w/ yam curry (should be called YUM curry), hummus, broccoli & tofu kebop and chickpea & vegetable stew. you can pick four dishes from a list of option

the Indian Thali platter

many raw vegan desserts

we picked raspberry & cacao fudge which was just eh…

and great raw chocolate orange cake. delicious!

the rest of the day was spent in the hotel room. ahhh.
