I will try and keep the superlatives in check.

so, ice cream. mmmmmm, ice cream!

I’ll start with Lula’s because Lula’s Sweet Apothecary is a magical MAGICAL place. It’s all vegan and has a cute old-timey ice cream parlor feel and, wow, the flavours are so SO delicious; they have soft serve (!) and many yummy toppings in glass jars. ask for samples to help with your decision. the atmosphere is great and the people running it are charming. I went there twice and if I’d live closer I would go there every single damn day!

On my first visit with Mike, Lisa, Dayna & Terry, I sampled strawberry cheese cake & peanut butter fudge and when I returned with Mike, Melisser and Bazu, I sampled the cake batter soft serve and it is safe to say that this is the best ice cream I ever had! Ever!

check out their menu
follow them on twitter
& visit them over and over and have some ice cream for me!

Lula’s Sweet Apothecary is located on 516 East 6th Street; 10009 NYC

We also checked out Stogo. Stogo is an all vegan, organic gourmet ice cream parlor. Less welcoming and charming than Lula’s but they stayed open for us when we called and arrived shortly before 11 pm (yep, late night ice cream in winter. it’s how we roll!) and were generous with sampling their flavours; I picked creamsicle!
There is a celebrity connection going on with Stogo that I will let you figure out for yourselves, we had a possible James Iha sighting (or was it Myles from Lost?!) and cupcakes from Babycakes Bakery are available. A+, would visit again!

Stogo is located on 159 2nd Avenue
follow them on twitter

I have been looking at the Tofu Omelets from Vegan Brunch for months now but never really dared to stand up to the challenge. While the City That Never Sleeps has vegan options, savory and/or sweet, on every corner and it would take many many weeks and many many vegan teams to sample them all, the situation is a little different in Florida’s Tampa area. So, you can imagine how eager I was to check out Grassroots Restaurant, one of the few vegan-friendly options around Tampa.
The restaurant is pleasantly casual, the clientele wonderfully mixed, service is friendly and, most importantly!, the food is great!

Here is what we sampled:

Key Lime Cheesecake w/ Agave Drizzle

Everything was fresh and delicious, and I recommend you visit Grassroots when you are in the area!

I am always amused by the slight smell of dog food or liverwurst even (gasp!) upon first opening a can of the spread, but the pleasant texture and yummy taste has me convinced and coming back for more always. Even though the spread comes in many different flavours and even in fun tubes and extra large cans, it always had a very simple, very rustic feel to it - flavours weren’t fancy, they were basic: herbs, mushrooms or apple/onion if you wanted to go crazy.
But just like our taste buds (hopefully!) mature and fries and ramen are not cutting it anymore (or not always), Tartex now also offers Patés in fancy flavours like grilled aubergine, arugula and mustard or, wait for it! sun dried tomato & vandouvan. how exquisite! my 90ies hardcore self is mocking my present self as we speak!

The wonderful Melisser, also known as The Urban Housewife in the vegan blogosphere, is my traveling hero! She is also the mastermind behind Sugar Beat Sweets and in the process of opening her own storefront in SF! This woman is an inspirational blogger, traveler and friend!

Melisser showing local products well deserved love.

1. when did you go vegan?
I went vegan about 2 and a half years ago. I was vegetarian before then, eating a mainly vegan diet & knew ethically I needed to go vegan, but I hadn’t had success with sweets. Once I baked some delicious vegan treats, I was on board 100%!

2. finish this sentence: veganism is awesome because…There’s so many fun, compassionate vegans out there that I enjoy meeting when I travel. Of course, saving animals lives is the best part!
3. what is your favourite vegan dish do you like to make/cook, what is your favourite vegan dish to eat ?I like to cook Indian food or anything with a ton of seasonal vegetables; lots of Brussels Sprouts make their way in to this kitchen. We also get very vegan around here & eat a lot of Kale & Quinoa, something has to off-set all the sweets we consume! My favorite dish to eat.. Does ice cream count?
4. list everything you have eaten today (so far).Well, it’s only lunch time, so nothing too crazy..
A locally grown Fuji Apple, first of this season’s crop!
Some Strawberry Frosting, yes yes, I know.
2 Corn Tortillas filled with Hummus & Smoky Peach Salsa, then grilled.
Leftover Bund Gobi with Matar from last night!

and once again, Melisser can be found at:
The Urban HousewifeSugar Beats Sweets & Strummer Calling, blogging about her pint sized rescued pup

the vegan goods i picked up in bratislava

Hungry after a fun and loud train ride we decided to go straight to grab some lunch.

Happy Cow lists a few vegetarian options, one of them is the Govinda Hare Krshna restaurant located at Obchodna 30 in the Old City. We decided to pass up curries, though and went straight to City Restaurant.

City Restaurant offers a daily changing vegetarian menu with vegan options. We were lucky and found a nice business lady to help us find the vegan options - the guys working the counter don’t speak much English- and we ended up with a simple filling dish: ragu and rice, a salad and fruit salad. We even found flapjacks by the register, a perfect snack for hungry travelers!

You can find City Restaurant upstairs at Obchodna 58.

We grabbed espressos at Schokocafe; piccolo means small and lango with extra hot water, just so you know :)

Shopped at a tiny health food store at Grosslingova 20. More on what goodies we found there in tomorrow’s entry!

Bratislava is a quaint little town perfect for a day trip, it feeds a vegan well after some asking around, the TVP is cheap and widely available, it’s walkable, people are helpful and I will definitely visit soon again.

Sunday is for late night baking!

Vegan MoFo is only on its 4th day and I am already way overwhelmed. Phew!

On Sundays I will pull out neglected cook books and bake a late night sweet treat. I like baking late at night in my quiet kitchen best, with the balcony door open. Since today was spent with napping and having pizza from across the street and hanging out with a friend, I started the Sunday MoFo baking with an old favourite. Whenever I am craving something sweet and need to have it stat! I end up baking The PPK’s chocolate chip cookies. I couldn’t find a single chip of the chocolate kind in my kitchen or pantry, so I chopped up a bar of hazelnut chocolate: yummy result!

goin’ metric

lovely cookies

My one and a half week vacation is starting tomorrow and will be filled with meeting new vegans and future friends, great food and hopefully time to read and cook and bake.

Oh, and ice cream!

First up is Mike, my favourite vegan. He likes chocolate chip cookies and really dislikes broccoli! Maybe you are next?

.

1. when did you go vegan?

I went vegetarian in 1999, followed by my entry into veganism in 2001. I gave up the dairy and replaced it with heaping amounts of vegan schnitzel and goulash.

2. finish this sentence: veganism is awesome because…

I get to eat large amounts of healthy vegan dishes without as large an environmental footprint.

3. what is your favourite vegan dish to make/cook, what is your favourite vegan dish to eat?

I’m a big fan of traditional Austrian meals, lots of hearty soups, hearty stews and of course dumplings, lots of dumplings. Whether I’m cooking them, or just eating them, pour a little goulash on top of some dumplings and I’m there.

4. list everything you have eaten today (so far).

I had a traditional Austrian breakfast, coffee and fresh baked bread, followed by a hearty vegan stew with chickpeas, potatoes and peas for lunch and a grilled piece of seitan in a fried onion sauce and dumplings with a side salad for dinner. As I said, I love the hearty meals.

Michael Borras is an internet entrepreneur, turning some of the knobs at social yellow pages startup Tupalo.com by day, and enjoys fine vegan sweets, baked goods and snacks by night.
