vegan coming of age: tartex

what speculoos is to vegans these days, Tartex was to the (European) vegans back in the 90ies: everybody loved it, traveling punk bands lived off of it, cans of Tartex were exported to the US by traveling vegans in vast quantities.

I am always amused by the slight smell of dog food or liverwurst even (gasp!) upon first opening a can of the spread, but the pleasant texture and yummy taste has me convinced and coming back for more always. Even though the spread comes in many different flavours and even in fun tubes and extra large cans, it always had a very simple, very rustic feel to it - flavours weren’t fancy, they were basic: herbs, mushrooms or apple/onion if you wanted to go crazy.
But just like our taste buds (hopefully!) mature and fries and ramen are not cutting it anymore (or not always), Tartex now also offers Patés in fancy flavours like grilled aubergine, arugula and mustard or, wait for it! sun dried tomato & vandouvan. how exquisite! my 90ies hardcore self is mocking my present self as we speak!

cute moustache soaps. vegan-friendly.

I madly fell in love with these cute and vegan (!) ‘stache soaps, that would make Tom Selleck jealous, at first sight! They are made in Austria with all vegan ingredients and the moustaches are my favourite item in the vast repertoire of Servas Gschaeft!

new vegan product: Natural Cool frozen pizza!

when i first moved away from my grandmother’s daily home cooked meals i quickly turned into a vegetarian living off of frozen pizza. these days i enjoy my pizza home made or from the place across the street, a marinara with fresh basil and only once in a while. and still i couldn’t pass up this product at the newly opened Maran supermarket that opened in our hood the other week.

this is a fun product but nothing to write home about: the crust is alright and the pepperoni delicious but sauce and lack of vegetables will make this a one time experience for me.

The Soy Latte Chronicles pt. 6 & “Now what about them vegan oreos?”

Coffeshop Company is an Austrian chain of American style coffee shops all over the city, they do have a quite delicious soy latte (they use my favourite: Alpro with calcium) and are an acceptable alternative to said American chain for me.

because you can grab a bunch of books, magazines, order a large coffee and read and “research” for hours. service could be better but what do you expect from people 10 years younger than you? the youth of today…. (i kid!)

and now on to the in-famous O-cookie, i know you can hardly wait.

yesterday fellow vegan Mike, of Tupalo.com & Team Vegan fame, informed us that he had (and didn’t share!!) a pack of vegan Oreos, the ones from America, not the stupid European-whey-version. i bought three packs, 6 cookies for € 2,10, and noticed at home that 2 of the 3 packs were vegan, the third contained whey! so, be careful and only pick up the ones that say NABISCO in the left top corner, ok?

top: NO NO! bottom: oh hell yeah!

the vegetarian pack will go to a good vegetarian or *cough* freegan home.

p.s. their oreo shake is not vegan when made with soy milk, a white chocolate powder to thicken up the mix is added that contains milk products. no idea how good the shake would be w/ ice cubes, cookies and soy milk. let me know if you try it!

vegan product: spelt raspberry & chocolate croissant.

if you are a vegan in this town and haven’t seen these delicious croissants around yet, you will probably want to give me your firstborn for pointing you towards them. keep it and give me cookies instead!

i first saw these puppies at Baeckerei Waldherr (this small company from Burgenland is responsible for baking these treats) on Naschmarkt, they are also available at DM (amongst other vegan pastries and cookies) and at the BioMarket.

Chocolate-y, sweet, flaky goodness that goes perfect w/ a soy latte.

Costs € 2,40 and is worth every penny!
